A chillum is a
conical pipe made out of clay, horn, stone, or glass. Chillums are
used as ritual pipes by Sadhus in India to imbibe herbs. Also, they
have recently been used by Rastas in reasoning sessions and
grounations. It is a very social form of smoking as a chillum is
generally far too strong to be smoked alone. The herb may be mixed
with tobacco. The cloth is wetted, the stone inserted and then the
mix is deposited in the chillum until it is full. Then the mouth
piece of the chillum is cupped between two hands forming a closed
prism so that the smoker may inhale the smoke without touching the
chillum with his lips. To do so would no doubt provoke a violent
reaction from all present for such a break of etiquette. A match is
struck by a second party and the smoker must puff violently to
ignite the chillum adequately which he will then pass always to the
person on his right, preferably supporting his right arm with his
left. |

The dugout is a
rectangular (or sometimes cylindrical) wooden object with two
compartments. The larger compartment stores the herb and a
cylindrical compartment is used to store the pipe used to smoke the
herb. The special pipe closely resembles a cigarette in size and
appearance. It may be painted gold/yellow on the stem and white down
the length to mimick the coloring of a cigarette. Metal, ceramic, or
glass in construction, it has a shallow recess into which the herb
is loaded. A narrow artery, through which the smoke from the herb is
channeled, extends from the recess to the opposite end of the pipe.
The dugout has a swiveling door which caps the two compartments. A
spring at the bottom of the cylindrical compartment pushes the end
of the pipe out of the box when the door is opened so that it can be
extracted from the box. The sharp edge of the recessed end of the
pipe allows the pipe to be loaded by burrowing it into the herb
compartment. The herb can then be smoked by lighting it with a flame
as one would light a tobacco cigarette. Often the metal of a lighter
is held in front of the pipe to reflect the light emitted from the
burning marijuana, allowing the user to monitor the burn while
inhaling the smoke. |

Metal pipes are
more generally associated with other drugs than tobacco use. Though
steel was a common material, aluminium and brass are more popular
materials now. The advantages of a metal pipe generally include
interchangeable parts for optimization and certain components are
limited to fit only a metal pipe, such as a threaded metal bowl with
optional cap via thread interface that will prevent spills or
accidentally blowing the cannabis from the bowl ("blow outs"). Their
retention of heat can make them uncomfortably and even dangerously
hot but most have rubber or plastic grips on the outside of the
pipe. Another common method for burn prevention is one or more
rubber rings, which can be placed at the base of the threadded area
and prevent conduction of heat. Another drawback of the metal pipe
is its typical top heavyness which makes it prone to spills. This is
compensated for by flat or squared ends on the 45° or 90° angled
elbow piece. Perhaps the most attractive aspect of a metal pipe over
a glass piece in many users' minds is that they are, in all normal
circumstance, basically indestructible. |

Hand-blown glass pipes are one of
the most common kind of hand pipes today. They can be
quite elaborate. One reason for their appeal is that
since the glass is completely inert, it does not affect
the flavor of the smoke. As the pipe is used, resin
build-up provides for a more contrasted background.
Glass pipes sometimes have a small hole on the side
that, when covered, enables continuous inhalation. When
inhalation is completed, the hole may be uncovered to
flood the smoke with air thus lending it the name
carburetor or "carb" (also 'choke', 'rush', or
'shotgun'). Due to their lack of porosity and tendency
to retain heat, glass pipes are usually used to smoke
cannabis and other substances besides tobacco. The added
space inside a glass pipe as compared to a metal one,
combined with proper use of the carb, result in the
potential to take a much larger and smoother-feeling
inhalation of smoke, which also appeals to cannabis
users. Glass pipes are usually more expensive than ones
made from plastic or metal. They are also highly prone
to irreparable damage. There is also a chance of the
pipe cracking as it gets too hot. |

Roach /
Crutch / Tip / Butt |
|
Often, when rolling
a spliff or a blunt a "tip" will be added to keep the herbs inside
the spliff / blunt, and provide a more solid mouthpiece. Most often,
crutches are made from a small, torn piece of cardboard, which is
rolled into a tight spiral and inserted in the smoking end of the
blunt. Using a crutch can prevent herbs from being wasted, as it
allows the blunt to burn to the end without becoming too hot to
hold. A roach clip is a clip, or holder, that is attached to a
spliff or blunt. Its purpose is to let the smoker smoke the last
piece of the blunt / spliff ("roach") without burning the lips or
fingers, and to facilitate passing around the roach without dropping
it. "Roach books" are small books usually with around 50 pieces of
card, the absolute perfect texture for making a good roach, and can
be bought from most paper or head shops. |

Rolling papers are
also called skins or rollys, but the term skinning up usually only
refers to the act of rolling a spliff. Newer rolling papers are
available in various flavors, sizes and even colours. This is
sometimes said to enhance the smoking experience. The latest rolling
papers are unbleached with a translucent brown color. These
unbleached papers provide a more natural smoking experience similar
to using a natural tobacco. Most papers are available in varying
thickness, from heavy weight to medium or fine. Some papers even
come in ultra-fine, to improve the smkoing experience. Here are some
noteable brands, although there are thousands available.
Abadie - Well Known
French brand in a pink pack
Bambu - Classic
Brand of rolling papers made in Argentina & Spain.
Bugler -
Top-selling low-end brand. Popular in US prison system and among
ex-cons.
JOB (France) - 1st
rolling paper in booklet form. Famous for iconic art nouveau posters
Juicy Jay's - Top
selling flavored paper brand
Laramie - notable
for tie-in with Simpsons cigarette brand
RAW - Unbleached
Vegan rolling papers, notable for their brown see-through properties
Rizla - (France):
18th century origins. Now 75% of the UK rolling paper market
Pay-Pay - Oldest
brand of rolling papers in the world. From 1703 Spain
Smoking - (Spain) -
popular in parts of Europe
# Zig-Zag- (France)
1st interleaved brand (hence the name).
Blunts - The word
blunt refers to a cigar that has been taken apart and re-rolled with
cannabis. Blunts are generally larger, longer and slower burning
than spliffs. This makes them more appealing for large groups of
smokers. Blunts are also more common in heavily populated areas, as
it's easy to obtain a single cigar almost anywhere, and there is
nothing leftover once it has been smoked. Some smokers rarely use
blunts because they claim it is too harsh, tastes bad, or they
simply do not like the idea of mixing their herb with tobacco.
There are three
popular methods for rolling a blunt;
In "leafing," the
outer leaf of the cigar is moistened and removed whole. The inner
leaf is then folded, filled with tobacco or herbs, and wrapped in
the outer leaf, which must remain moist. Leafing creates a
tightly-rolled and durable blunt, providing an even burn.
In "Spliffing," the
cigar is split lengthways with a razor or a fingernail. The tobacco
is then removed, replaced with herbs, and resealed (some prefer only
removing a certain amount of the tobacco, mixing the herb with the
tobacco and resealing.
Another way to roll
a blunt involves using blunt wraps. These are essentially pre-made,
100% cigar rolling papers. All that is needed is to spread tobacco
or marijuana evenly throughout the blunt paper, roll it up and seal
it. Most are sealed individually to keep them fresh, moist and
flexible, as dry cigar leaves are prone to cracking and breaking.
Some brands also include a plastic straw, around which the blunt
paper is rolled during manufacturing, and a transparent, plastic
sheet wrapped around the blunt paper to give an extra layer of
protection. This tube can be used to pack the tobacco down in the
burning end once it has been rolled up. Also available are all
natural tobacco leaves cut size and put in to a resealable package.
They are a little easier to roll but burn quicker than other types
of blunts. The newest blunt wrappers come in a resealable plastic
tube. This allows the smoker to place the rolled blunt back into the
tube and close/seal it for later use. |

| Herb grinders
are a relatively new creation. Grinders consist of two parts, each
of which is essentially hollow except for pins or teeth. These two
bits fit together and when they are rotated, the teeth grind up any
herbal material you've put inside. This is meant to give you good,
finely ground material that will burn well. Sweetleaf were the first
to bring a herb grinder to the market, introducing it's wooden model
to the world in 2000 before extending their range with party sized
then aluminium models. Since then, the market has spawned dozens of
imitators from countless companies. Wooden grinders have proven to
be prone to getting clogged up and becoming difficult to use. Today,
grinders are available in plastics, nylons, wood, aluminium,
magnetic metal and some other materials. Some grinders have been
modified to include a seperate section which is screened off with a
very fine mesh to collect crystals which drop off your herb. These
are sometimes known as Crystal Collectors. There are also electric
grinders which are operated by batteries and use a small fan to chop
your herb into very fine pieces, also able to seperate the pollen
from the plant material. Hash Grinders are made from super strong
aluminum and titanium and have very sharp teeth in order to "grind"
hash. Herb graters are also used to grate fine flakes of herb / hash
instead of grinding. |

Vaporizing is an
alternative to smoking. Rather than burning the cannabis, a
vaporizer heats it enough (typically around 200 degrees Celsius) so
that the volatile psychoactive and medicinal constituents contained
in the plant's oily glandular secretions melt and phase into an
aromatic vapor that does not contain the particulate matter (tars)
found in the smoke. Subsequently, the vapor is inhaled in the case
of most vaporizers, or is moisture conditioned and/or ice cooled in
the case of the modular vaporization "tools". With less or no smoke
formed, and a cooler temperature, the irritating or harmful effects
of smoke and associated toxins are greatly reduced or even
eliminated.
Broadly, vaporizers
can be classified into how they heat the substance: by convection or
conduction:
With convection
heating, the substance itself never touches a heating element.
Instead, hot air passes over it heating it rapidly and allowing the
release of the active constituents. This method of heating is by far
superior, and releases far more active constituents than conduction
heating.
With conduction
heating, the substance is placed on a metal plate that is then
heated to release the active constituents. These vaporizers are
inferior as the direct contact between hot metal and the herbs can
cause them to burn.
Vaporizers also
differ in other respects, such as how the vapors are 'delivered':
with direct lung delivery, the user controls the rate of vapor
creation by inhaling to draw the hot air over the herbs. This
creates the freshest vapor possible. With stored vapor delivery, the
machine creates vapor and stores it in a glass dome or plastic bag
for later inhalation. Depending on the type of filling chamber
equipped in the vaporizer, whole plant material or liquid samples
(e.g., aromatic oil, extract, or pure compounds in solution) can be
used. |

A typical bong is
made of few components:
1. Mouthpiece -
this is where the user's mouth is placed, sealing out air from the
chamber.
2. Chamber - where
smoke collects.
3. Base - holds
water and is usually wider than the chamber so it can stand up
without tipping.
4. Down Stem - a
tube which has one end in the base and the other end sticking out
the side with the bowl at the end of it.
5. Bowl - usually a
removable cup or cone shaped container made of metal, glass, wood,
or ceramic, where the drug is packed and ignited. The bowl forms a
seal around the stem so that the only inlet of air is through the
bowl.
The most
minimalistic bongs contain only a combination mouthpiece/chamber and
a bowl/stem.
Smoking from a bong
is somewhat different than smoking from a pipe or cigarette. Bongs
are designed to cool the smoke before it enters the smoker's lungs,
to build up a large buffer of smoke which the user inhales quickly,
or to filter unwanted chemicals from the smoke before inhalation.
One inhales with his or her mouth sealed against the large opening
at the top of the chamber. Sucking the air out of the bong reduces
the air pressure in the chamber of the bong above the water level in
the bottom of the bong. To equalize the pressure, the atmosphere
pushes air through the bong's "bowl" - where the combustible matter
has been placed and is lit whilst simultaneously inhaling - pulling
the smoke down through the stem. The smoke then bubbles through the
water, into the chamber and into the mouth and lungs. The bubbling
produces a characteristic noise.
Bongs can vary
greatly in their shape, material, style, color, and size. Commonly
constructed from metal, acrylic, ceramic or glass, bongs can also be
fabricated from materials as diverse as pykrete or even from
household objects such as empty water bottles. Some people even make
bongs out of fruits and vegetables and discard them after use. One
of the most common variety of bong is the ice bong which are a sub
variety of slide or carburetor bongs. These are typically made of
glass or acrylic like this one to the right. Ice is placed in a
twist or ice trap in the neck. This has the effect of cooling the
smoke when the user comes to inhaling. These bongs are typically
bright colours and are popular due to the durability, ease of use
and controlability. They usually have carb holes on the opposite
side to the bowl or slightly to the left or right of that position.
These tend to have larger chambers than other bong varieties as ice
is used rarely in smaller bongs. |
